New Heritage Hill Artist-in-Residence, Motoko Katsuta Kitano has now started working from her studio in the Benga House Lounge Room and will be with us until late February 2015.
Motoko Katsuta Kitano is an international multidisciplinary artist who studied painting and sculpture in Japan, USA and Hungary. She lived in Germany for six years, which exposed the diversity of artistic expression in the epicentre of European contemporary art.
“I am fascinated by the diversity of our lives, ever changing with the passage of time. This gives me hope and inspiration. I grew up in Japan, every day listening to my mother’s Tanka and Haiku poetry. Her intuition and talent for conveying imagery containing emotion within four seasons in Japan is a gift I will always treasure. My father’s painting was another great influence, as well as Japanese Literature and Calligraphy from my grandparents.
Now I am in Australia, an entirely new continent to me, yet a land so ancient. I plan [to develop] a pictorial diary, expressing the imagery that comes from my heart and mind, in my own abstract style. I [will] capture the feeling each day, inspired by my interaction with my surroundings at Heritage Hill, its people and culture.”
Motoko Katsuta Kitano will be working with local Greater Dandenong Community to create a large boat and small origami boats as a response to ideas of migration throughout our ancient and contemporary world.
“We make these boats, hoping they will reach their destination. Our heart will always remember our ancestors, our pioneers, our people, our children.”
