Now it’s getting warmer, Sundays in the Sun is starting up again! For those of you who are new to our blog, Sundays in the Sun is a monthly relaxed afternoon of live music, family friendly activities and entertainment in the gardens. Bring a picnic and enjoy the fun, festivities and awesome live music in Heritage Hill’s beautifully manicured grounds from 12 to 3. It’s a free event!

Our musicians this month are:

Hello Satellites – Hello Satellites is the new project from Melbourne songwriter Eva Popov. It moves in the pop world whilst maintaining a depth that belies the escapism of modern pop music.

Jessica Paige – Singer, songwriter, guitarist and multi award winner Jessica Paige started her music career at the age of 15. Influenced by the Beatles, Elton John, Billy Joel, Rufus Wainwright, Ray LaMontagne and Van Dyke Parks, ‘The Music Network’ quoted her writing as “gorgeous melodies and delicious lyrics to match” while Adam Hills calles her “my favourite singer song-writer”

Gwendolyne O’Dea – with performances at the Apollo Bay Music Festival and appearances as a guest on both ABC 774 and Triple R Gwendolyn’s fast paced folk and country vocals give her the edge.

So come along and enjoy the day. We’ll see you this Sunday at Heritage Hill.

October is a busy month here at Heritage Hill. We have oodles of things going on, take a deep breath and here we go…

Our two exhibitions this month are LINEages of Dandenong, by Pixi Mix in Benga house and Never Too Old To Create by a local group of older artists in Laurel Lodge.
This is LINEages of Dandenong, in which Pixi Mix has created massive, life-sized charcoal drawings of historical photos of Dandenong’s citizens which are interspersed with details of present day Dandenong on transparent architectural paper layered together on the wall. The result is a ghostly presence of then and now all culminating is a beautiful visual investigation into the identity of Dandenong.

Meanwhile, down in Laurel Lodge we have Never Too Old To Create from a group of older artists, aged 78-92. These artists are proving that older people still have contributions to make to the community. The over 40 works have been painted over the last few years by this spritely bunch of ladies and gentlemen which portray a wide variety of subjects including gardens, animals, still lives and even a few marine-themed images from around the world.

We also have Sundays in the Sun starting up again. So next Sunday the 14th of October we have Gwendolyne O’Dea, Jessica Paige and Hello Satellites playing chilled out tunes in the gardens from 12-3. So pack a picnic and come hang out at Hertiage Hill.
And we have our final Artist in Residence for the year, The Society of Histronic Happenings down from Sydney, holed up in the Old School House researching Laurel Lodge and it’s stories for the next installment of their show The Governess.

So do drop by and check out one or all of these great happenings!

First up we had the ever lovely Paper Dreams, a local duo who sang some beautiful originals and a couple of awesome covers. (more…)

This week’s acts are the delightful Paper Dreams, who played here in February (you can read their interview here) and the very talented Jesse Mitchell. Today we present our interview with Jesse, so you can learn a little about him before seeing him Sunday…

Tell us a little about yourself and your work…
Well aside from the music, I work for a Not-For-Charity organisation called Jem that provides supported accommodation for people who are homeless and in need of a stable place to live. I also last year launched a Fair Trade business called Little Tree Shop I’m currently just getting off the ground.. it sells a range of fairtrade and ethical products like bags, clothing, towels, tea/coffee etc. (more…)

Today we have an interview with the delightful Sofia from Vardos, who are our musical guests for this Sunday’s Sunday in the Sun.

Tell us about Vardos’ most recent trip overseas…
We performed in Wellington, New Zealand in February, does that count?! It was for a poetry book launch (Aleksandra Lane who is from Serbia), and we managed to see lots of Fringe shows too. VARDOS performed in 2010 at the West meets East Roma and Traveller Festival (London), Museum of the Bohemian (Amsterdam), Szent Ivan FolkFest (Hungary) and bars in Berlin. In Amsterdam we cycled to our gigs with all the instruments in a big panier at the front- including the double bass! Study and travel followed in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia and Latvia. (more…)
