Now known as the ANL Maritime Art Prize & Exhibition, the award promotes excellence in maritime and seafaring subjects in art and assists in raising the profile of the 1.5 million merchant seafarers responsible for transporting more than 90 per cent of world trade.

Global efforts to improve conditions for seafarers are constant, as has been the provision of welfare services by the MTSV since 1857 in the Port of Melbourne. The ANL Art Prize is an important event made possible with thanks to naming rights sponsor ANL, corporate sponsors, the contributing artists and the individuals who give their time and expertise to curate, judge and select the works.

All works exhibited are for sale and pay a 33% commission toward supporting seafarers’ welfare.

Entries close Monday 2nd September 2013, 2012.

The exhibition is open for public viewing from 3rd – 27th October, 2013 at the historic seafarers’ centre at 717 Flinders Street, Docklands from 12 noon – 7pm Tuesday – Sunday

Venue: Drum Theatre – Cnr Walker Street and Lonsdale Street, Dandenong (VIC)
When: 16 May 2013 8pm

Presented by Ilbijerri Theatre Company
An extraordinary tale written and told by one of the nation’s near forgotten treasures.

Uncle Jack Charles is an Australian legend: veteran actor, musician, Koori elder, activist and, until recently, heroin addict and cat-burglar. This is a show about his life – told by him.

From Stolen Generation to Koori theatre in the 70s, from film sets to Her Majesty’s prisons, Jack Charles V The Crown runs the gamut of a life lived to its utmost. Charles’ unswerving optimism transforms this tale of addiction, crime and doing time into a kind of vagabond’s progress – a map of the traps of dispossession and a guide to reaching the age of grey-haired wisdom.

Accompanied by a three-piece band, this one-man show is a theatrical delight and a celebration brought to us by the oldest Indigenous theatre company in Australia.

Contains strong language and adult themes.
75 minutes, no interval.

Tickets:
A: $45
M: $35
C: $40
G4+: $40
U25: $25

It began as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company. Knitting is such a solitary act that it’s easy to knit alone somewhere and sink into your work without thinking about all the other knitters out there. Neighbors could spend all their lives never knowing that the other knits. This a specific day to get out of your house and go to a local event (with your knitting in tow) just for you and people like you. Who knows you might even bump into your neighbor! Consider this a spark, to ignite a fire; getting all of the closeted knitters out into fresh air.

World Knit in Public Day is unique, in that it’s the largest knitter run event in the world. Each local event is put together by a volunteer or a group of volunteers. They each organize an event because they want to, not because they have to. They bring their own fresh ideas into planning where the event should be held, and what people would like to do.

If you’re interested in organising an event, gather your knitting friends together and find a place to Knit in Public! It could be at a cafe, in a shopping mall, outside in a park or anywhere at all.

WWKiP Day is really about showing the general public that knitting can be a community activity in a very distinct way. In some places there are many different knitting groups that never interact with each other, on WWKiP Day they come together in one place, making them hard to miss.

In 2005, there were about 25 local events around the world. In 2006, there were about 70 local events, and in 2007, almost 200. In 2008, there were 800 events, and in 2009, 751 events.

Over the years there have been local events in Australia, China, England, Finland, France, Ireland, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, United States and so many more countries.

WWKiP Day takes now takes place from the second Saturday to the third Sunday of June each year; making it a week long celebration of knitting and other fiber arts. So grab your needles, find a public place and start knitting!

Last week, our Artist in Residence for March, photographer Kate Winterton, emailed me a few works she created during her time here at Heritage Hill. Last year, Kate was working on a photographic series called Shift which responded to a heritage listed space in Dandenong, focusing on the sense of aura and traces of past human contact, which is what Kate feels charges a historical space.

Kate continued this theme during her residency here and here we present some of the beautiful works she has created while here.

Through a series of precise cuts, this bollard departs from the rhythm of the car park expressed rigidly aligned concrete columns and repetitive architectural structures.

Through Rowlands carefully considered reconfiguring of the bollard, audiences are invited to see the object as an entirely new form or to read it back into its former self. In doing so, the opportunity exists to reflect on the wider process of change.

Make a bird & play a part in celebrating life, regeneration and hope.

A bird in the bush will see hundreds of handmade birds flock in Aberfeldy from all around the state. There will be community workshops to make and decorate simple fabric birds and leaves —as well as small wooden birds—leading up to a beautiful installation and celebration at the Heyfield Park on June 1 (Market Day).

At the same time primary school children will learn a new dance celebrating life, growth and renewal to perform on the day.

We are encouraging people to send in birds from far and wide to show their support. Help to call back the birds and celebrate life, regeneration and hope.

Project participants will work with a professional animator to develop a group story, based on their own life experiences, and create an original short animation film. The project will explore storytelling, storyboarding, film production and various animation techniques, with a focus on using the iPad as an animation tool.

The project runs on Saturdays from 1-4pm at North Melbourne Town Hall, starting Sat 20 April and running for 12 weeks. A small weekly fee will be agreed depending on circumstances and funding package.

If you’re interested, or know someone else who would be, please contact Wild@heART on 9326 9970 or info@wildatheart.org.au.

Wild@heART’s most recent animation project, You See Me, was recently screened at the Other Film Festival, at Moscow’s Breaking Down The Barriers disability film festival, and is soon to be screened on Federation Square’s big screen.
